A Weekend Getaway to Saugatuck, Michigan

Saugatuck, Michigan is a hidden gem nestled on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. This charming lakeside town, known for its artistic flair, stunning natural beauty, and warm community spirit, offers the perfect recipe for an idyllic weekend getaway.

Upon arriving in Saugatuck, we were greeted by a welcoming atmosphere that both charmed and excited us. The town’s main streets are lined with quaint boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, and charming cafes. Our first stop was a regional distillery’s tasting room, New Holland Brewing Co, where the local spirits are served up in a welcoming atmosphere. Sipping on unique cocktails, we planned our itinerary for our weekend visit.

Shopping in Saugatuck, Michigan

Saugatuck is a haven for art enthusiasts, boasting a thriving arts community that is evident in its numerous galleries and studios. The streets are lined with quaint shops, family (and dog) friendly activities, gifts, and more. We spent an afternoon exploring the diverse boutiques and shops, which were filled with works by local artists. I particularly enjoyed the relaxed but sophisticated vibe of the boutiques and came home with a new summer outfit in the coastal grandma style.

Strolling the streets of Saugatuck, Michigan

Before heading home after our first day, we strolled the boardwalk to admire the many yachts docked along the river and stopped at a rooftop patio for a specialty cocktail while taking in the beauty of the surroundings.

Tip: To avoid the wait, we sat at the bar here. You can see from my picture that we were still able to take in the surroundings without having to wait for a table.

Dining in Saugatuck, Michigan

Culinary delights awaited us at every turn in Saugatuck, with a wide array of dining options to choose from. On our final day, we indulged in a lunch of fresh seafood at a waterfront restaurant as we enjoyed the boats gliding lazily along the river and admired the many yachts docked along the boardwalk. The farm-to-table ethos was evident in every dish, with locally sourced ingredients taking center stage. As an example, I chose an appetizer of fresh mussels and an entree featuring Walleye, a fish native to the Great Lakes, served with pistachios and couscous with local vegetables.

Saugatuck Chain Ferry

The Saugatuck Chain Ferry, Diane, is the only remaining chain-driven ferry in the country, in use since 1838. Crossing the tranquil waters of the Kalamazoo River, this unique ferry provides both locals and visitors with a nostalgic and leisurely mode of transportation. The ferry’s distinctive design, propelled by hand-cranked mechanisms, harkens back to a bygone era. As you embark on this brief journey, you’ll be treated to captivating views of the surrounding natural beauty, including lush landscapes and serene waters. The Saugatuck Chain Ferry connects downtown Saugatuck to Mount Baldhead Park and Oval Beach and takes about five minutes.

Saugatuck Dunes Park

Just a short drive away lies the Saugatuck Dunes State Park, a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, beach, and nature lovers. Our exploration of this park allowed us to connect with the beauty of Lake Michigan in its purest form, just a short drive from town. As we entered the park, the air was filled with the scent of pine trees and the soft rustling of leaves, and having just rained was green and lush.

Note: If you don’t have a yearly pass be prepared to pay a fee to enter the park. The fee is nominal and well worth it, especially if you plan to spend the day.

The trailhead is right off the main parking area, leading us through a diverse range of ecosystems, from lush woodlands to towering sand dunes. The most iconic feature of the park is, undoubtedly, the towering sand dunes that overlook the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan. As our time was short, we opted for Beach Trail, a .6-mile hike that takes visitors up and over the dunes straight to three miles of sandy beach below. Our visit was on an overcast day with occasional rain, so we practically had the beach to ourselves. I imagine on a sunny day, families and sun worshippers enjoy the beach for hours on end as it truly feels like a day at the ocean!

For those seeking adventure, the park offers hiking and cross-country skiing trails of varying difficulty levels, ensuring that every visitor can find an activity that suits their preferences. The tranquility and solitude we experienced while hiking through the woods were a welcome contrast to our busy daily routines.
