Saugatuck, Michigan is a true hidden gem nestled along the art-filled eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Known for its vibrant arts scene, towering freshwater sand dunes, pristine beaches, and warm coastal hospitality, this charming small town offers the perfect recipe for an idyllic weekend getaway from Chicago, Detroit, or Grand Rapids.
Upon arriving in downtown Saugatuck, you are immediately greeted by a welcoming maritime atmosphere. The town’s walkable main thoroughfares, Butler Street and Water Street, are lined with historic brick storefronts, boutique galleries, farm-to-table eateries, and lively rooftop bars overlooking the Kalamazoo River.
Our first order of business after arriving was checking out the local tasting scene at New Holland Brewing Co.’s Spirits Campus, where craft spirits and regional brews are served up in a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. Sipping on inventive botanical cocktails, we mapped out our ideal weekend itinerary for exploring the best things to do in Saugatuck.

Boutique Shopping & The Arts Scene in Downtown Saugatuck
Saugatuck has been recognized as a thriving artist colony since the early 20th century, home to the prestigious Ox-Bow School of Art. That creative heritage is on full display today in the town’s numerous independent art galleries, pottery studios, and artisan shops.
The downtown shopping district is completely pedestrian-friendly, offering family-friendly (and dog-friendly!) activities, handcrafted gifts, and high-end coastal apparel.

Finding Your Coastal Style on Butler Street
Plan to spend at least a full afternoon exploring the diverse shops along Butler Street, which feature original works by West Michigan artists alongside curated home decor and resort wear.
I particularly enjoyed the relaxed yet sophisticated aesthetic of the local fashion boutiques. I ended up coming home with a stylish new summer outfit embracing that effortlessly chic “coastal grandma” look, perfect for strolling along the marina or enjoying an evening boat cruise.
Waterfront Strolls & Rooftop Cocktails
After shopping, take a leisurely stroll down the boardwalk to admire the luxury yachts, historic luggers, and sailboats docked along the Kalamazoo River.
Pro-Tip for Busy Weekends: To avoid long wait times at popular waterfront restaurants and rooftop patios during peak summer weekends, head straight for the bar seating! We were able to snag prime seats immediately, taking in panoramic river views without waiting for a dining room table.

Where to Eat: Farm-to-Table Dining & Fresh Seafood
Culinary delights await at every turn in Saugatuck, with a dining scene that punches well above its weight for a town of its size.
The Great Lakes farm-to-table ethos shines in every local restaurant, with fresh agricultural produce from nearby Allegan County farms and wild-caught fish taking center stage on seasonal menus.
Fresh Great Lakes Walleye & Waterfront Dining
We treated ourselves to a leisurely lunch of fresh seafood at a waterfront deck, watching kayaks and pontoon boats glide lazily down the channel while admiring the yachts moored along the boardwalk.
For my main meal, I started with an appetizer of steamed mussels prepared in a delicate garlic and white wine broth right on the water.
For the main entree, I ordered fresh Great Lakes Walleye, a delicate, sweet freshwater fish native to the region, crusted with pistachios and served alongside fluffy couscous and seasonal local summer vegetables. Pair your meal with a crisp Michigan Riesling or a local hard cider for the ultimate Great Lakes dining experience.

Ride the Historic Saugatuck Chain Ferry (“Diane”)
No trip to Saugatuck is complete without taking a ride on the Saugatuck Chain Ferry (affectionately named Diane). Originally commissioned in 1838, it holds the distinction of being the only remaining hand-cranked chain ferry in the United States.

Crossing the peaceful waters of the Kalamazoo River, this historic vessel provides both locals and visitors with a nostalgic, leisurely mode of transportation.
Ferry Logistics & Crossing to Mount Baldhead
Propelled entirely by a deckhand turning a manual hand-crank attached to a submerged chain, the ferry harkens back to a bygone era of Great Lakes travel.
Ferry Route: The chain ferry connects downtown Saugatuck (at Water Street) directly across to the base of Mount Baldhead Park and the walking path to Oval Beach.
Duration & Cost: The crossing takes roughly 5 minutes and costs just a few dollars in cash per passenger.
Scenic Views: During the brief ride, passengers enjoy uninterrupted, water-level views of the surrounding riverbank, lush hardwood forests, and passing watercraft.
Exploring Saugatuck Dunes State Park
Located just a 10-minute drive north of downtown lies Saugatuck Dunes State Park, a sprawling 1,000-acre coastal preserve that serves as a sanctuary for outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, and beach lovers.

Visiting this state park allows you to experience the wild beauty of Lake Michigan in its purest form. As you enter under the thick forest canopy, the crisp air fills with the fragrance of pine trees and the rustle of maple and oak leaves, especially lush and vibrant after a light morning rain.
Park Entrance & Pass Requirements: Michigan residents can enter using their Recreation Passport. Out-of-state visitors will need to purchase a non-resident daily or annual Michigan State Park pass at the gate. The fee is nominal and well worth every penny for full-day access to pristine trails and secluded shoreline.
Hiking the Dunes to Lake Michigan
The main trailhead begins right off the central parking lot, weaving through diverse ecosystems ranging from forested wooded valleys to towering, shifting sand dunes that rise over 200 feet above the lake.
The Beach Trail (.6 Miles): Because our schedule was tight, we chose the popular Beach Trail. This 0.6-mile direct hike takes visitors up and over rolling forested dunes before descending down onto a secluded 3-mile stretch of undeveloped sandy beach.
Trail Conditions: The trail involves hiking up sandy inclines, so wear comfortable walking shoes or sturdy sandals.
The Beach Experience: Our visit took place on a cool, overcast day with light rain showers, which meant we had miles of dramatic shoreline almost entirely to ourselves. On warm, sunny summer days, this expansive beach becomes a paradise for sunbathers, swimmers, and beachcombers looking for Michigan Petoskey stones.
Year-Round Outdoor Adventure
For those seeking longer hikes, Saugatuck Dunes State Park features over 13 miles of interconnected hiking trails, including the Livingston Trail and Patty Birkholz Natural Area. During the winter months, these same trails transform into popular routes for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
