Guide to Meadows in the Sky Parkway: The Best Stop on a Vancouver to Banff Road Trip

If you’re driving from Vancouver to Banff, it’s easy to get laser-focused on reaching the Rockies and those famous lakes, Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. But there is one detour just outside the town of Revelstoke that you absolutely cannot skip. Imagine a winding road that takes you from the valley floor straight into subalpine wildflower meadows. No grueling 6-hour hike required. It’s called the Meadows in the Sky Parkway in Mount Revelstoke National Park, and it is the most rewarding, effortless mountain view on the entire road trip, especially in August.

The Drive: 26 Kilometers of Magical Switchbacks

The magic of Revelstoke is the drive itself. You pay your park fee and immediately start ascending through a rainforest of cedar and hemlock, which slowly thins out into subalpine forest.

There are plenty of pullouts along the way to stop and take photos, but the real prize is at the top. The road ends at the Balsam Lake area, and when we stepped out of the car, we were completely blown away. Being there in August means the meadows are absolutely exploding with colorful blooms like vibrant red Indian paintbrush, purple lupine, and white valerian. The wildflowers made it look like we were stepping straight into a fairytale. Seriously, I could not stop taking photos.

The Hike: Taking the Sentier Summit (Summit Trail)

Once you park at Balsam Lake, you have options. There is a free shuttle that can take you to the very top, but if you want to fully experience the mountain air, I highly recommend doing the short walk yourself.

We bypassed the shuttle and headed straight for the Sentier Summit (the official Summit Trail). And we practically had the place to ourselves. Either we got lucky or this is the best kept secret in the area.

The trail is a gentle, steady climb that winds its way up through the subalpine forest and wildflower patches for about one kilometer. It is completely paved and beautifully maintained, making it an easy option even if you aren’t dressed in heavy-duty hiking gear.

Along the way, the trail connects to the Heather Lake Loop, a pristine, crystal-clear alpine lake that reflects the surrounding peaks like a mirror. Continuing up to the very top brings you to the historic fire lookout. Standing at the peak, surrounded by panoramic views of the Monashee and Selkirk mountain ranges, you feel like you’re on top of the world—with only a fraction of the effort of a backcountry trek.

The “Off Duty” Traveler’s Tips for Revelstoke

  • The Weather Warning: Remember the Packing for the Canadian Rockies in August rule! It can be a balmy 80°F down in the town of Revelstoke, but by the time you reach the summit parking lot, the temperature can easily drop 20 degrees. Throw your “mountain chic” layers or a light fleece in the back seat before you start the drive.
  • Time It Right: The upper portion of the parkway is open for a short window in the summer (usually late July through September) once the snow finally melts. August is the absolute peak for the wildflower bloom.
  • Logistics: Budget about 2 to 3 hours for the detour. It’s the perfect midday break to stretch your legs and break up the long drive between Kamloops and Golden or Banff.

Go: Don’t Just Drive By

It is so easy to treat the drive between Vancouver and Banff as just a way to get from Point A to Point B. But Mount Revelstoke is proof that the journey is often just as incredible as the destination. Stepping into that August wildflower fairytale on the Sentier Summit was one of the absolute highlights of our entire trip, and it requires zero intense gear or grueling mileage to experience.

If you are planning your mountain route this summer, do yourself a favor: set your alarm a little earlier, pack an extra layer for the summit chill, and take the turnoff for the Meadows in the Sky Parkway. You won’t regret it.
