The Perfect 24 Hours in Rochester, NY: From the Public Market to Lake Ontario

The Village of Fairport, NY on the Erie Canal

Want to experience the absolute best of Rochester, NY in just one day? From eating your way through the historic Public Market and kayaking the Erie Canal to indulging in fresh cider donuts and dining on Lake Ontario, here is your ultimate 24-hour itinerary.

If you only have one day to spend in Rochester, NY, you need an itinerary that hits the ground running and doesn’t waste a single minute. While it’s impossible to see all of the Flower City in 24 hours, you can experience its best local flavors, historic waterways, and lakeside views if you know exactly where to go.

Grab your sunglasses and a big appetite! Here is how to maximize every second of your perfect 24 hours in and around Rochester.

Stop 1: Early Morning Fuel at the Rochester Public Market

Rochester, NY Public Market

To experience the true heartbeat of the city, you have to start early at the Rochester Public Market (booming on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and especially Saturdays). Serving the community since 1905, this bustling hub is a sensory overload in the best way possible.

Take a stroll down the vibrant aisles packed with local farmers shouting out prices on fresh produce, artisan cheese makers, and local crafters.

The Golden Rochester Rule: Do not leave the market without getting a fresh, piping-hot empanada from Juan and Maria’s or a massive breakfast sandwich from Scott’s II. Grab a coffee, soak in the live street music, and watch the city wake up.

Stop 2: Kayaking the Erie Canal in Fairport

After navigating the market crowds, it’s time to head just 20 minutes east to my home town, the picture-perfect village of Fairport. This charming canal town feels like it belongs in a storybook, and there’s no better way to see it than from the water.

Rent a kayak from Erie Canal Boat Company right on the waterfront and launch into the historic Erie Canal. Paddling along the calm waters gives you a completely unique perspective of the iconic Fairport lift bridge and the beautifully restored canal paths.

Keep an eye out for local wildlife, passing boats, and the cyclists waving from the Heritage Trail, the original tow path, alongside you. It is remarkably peaceful and the perfect midday active escape.

Bonus Treat: Authentic Gelato at Royal Cafe

Once you’ve safely docked your kayak, which Erie Canal Boat Company will do for you, take a two-minute walk over to Main Street to find Royal Cafe Gelato. Stepping inside this local gem feels like a quick trip to Italy. The owner slow-churns the gelato bases completely from scratch with pure cane sugar and fresh ingredients, hand-roasting the nuts for the hazelnut flavor and crafting incredibly vibrant dairy-free fruit sorbettos.

They let you mix and match up to three flavors in a single small cup, so you don’t have to choose between classics like Stracciatella and Salted Caramel. Grab a seat on their outdoor patio, look out toward the canal, and enjoy la dolce vita in the heart of Fairport.

A Pint and a Pop-Star Moment at Mulconry’s Irish Pub

Mulconry’s Irish Pub is a Jimmy Fallon hangout

If you prefer a cold pint over a cup of gelato after being on the water, make a pit stop at Mulconry’s Irish Pub & Restaurant on Main Street. This multi-level, authentic Irish watering hole is a local legend for its perfectly poured Guinness, shepherd’s pie, and booming live music. But it also holds a massive claim to fame:

Jimmy Fallon is a regular.

The Tonight Show host is long-time buddies with the pub’s owner, Damien Mulconry, from their days back in New York City. If you happen to time your visit right, especially around early March or holiday weekends, you might just catch Jimmy popping behind the bar to pour drinks, chatting with locals, or jumping on stage with the band to belt out a Radiohead cover. It’s the ultimate “only-in-Fairport” experience.

Stop 3: Sweet Treats at Schutt’s Apple Mill

Since you just had a small gelato, there’s still room for more Upstate New York specialties like cider or friedcakes. So take a short drive north into Webster to visit Schutt’s Apple Mill. This fourth-generation family country store has been a local staple since 1918, and the second you open the door, the aroma tells you exactly why. I have such memories of coming here when I was a child, and I never missing a visit when I’m in town.

While they are famous for their all-natural sweet cider, the absolute mandatory order here is a batch of their freshly made cider fried cakes (don’t you dare call them donuts). Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and perfect for dipping. If you’re visiting during the warmer months, check out their hard cider tasting room or their u-pick fields; if it’s autumn, you can’t beat picking your own classic NY apples. They are the absolute best.

Stop 4: Sunset and Dinner at the Port of Rochester

To cap off an incredible day, head north to where the Genesee River meets the vast expanse of Lake Ontario: The Port of Rochester.

The waterfront boardwalk here is spectacular, especially as the late afternoon sun begins to dip. Take a walk out along the pier to see the historic lighthouse, or watch the boats glide into the marina.

For dinner, grab an outdoor patio seat at one of the waterfront restaurants like Margie’s at the Port or the classic Rochester chain Bill Grays. Indulge in some fresh seafood, a classic Upstate fish fry, or a local craft brew while watching the sunset over the water.

If you have any room left for dessert, walk over to the legendary Abbott’s Frozen Custard right next to Bill Grays for a scoop of “Chocolate Almond” to perfectly round out your Rochester adventure.

It is so good you won’t believe it.

When I was a child my dad used to pretend our car was going out of control in front of Abbotts. My car suddenly goes out of control now. I need to have that checked.

Pro-Tip for the Road: Rochester is a driving-friendly metro, so having a car (or utilizing rideshares) is the easiest way to hop from the city center out to the canal and up to the lakefront all in one day!
